According to the latest Open Doors report, in academic year 2008/09, 12,823 students from Vietnam were studying in the United States (up 46.2% from the previous year). Vietnam has become the ninth-leading place of origin for students coming to the United States, moving up from thirteenth place in 2007/08.

The number of Vietnamese students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education jumped by nearly 1,500 from 4,597 to 6,036, a 31.3% increase over the 2005/06 academic year. This information is from Open Doors 2007, the just released annual report on international academic mobility, published by the Institute of International Education (IIE) with support from the US State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
