GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATIONS® (GRE®)

Prospective graduate applicants in many fields of study take the test. GRE test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating grades and recommendations.

Some Subject Tests yield sub scores that can indicate the strengths and weaknesses of individual students' preparation and may be useful for guidance and placement purposes.

THE COMPUTER-BASED TEST:

ETS has just opened one GRE computer-based test center in Ho Chi Minh City. VSIC Informatics Center is authorized to administer this test. The test schedule is given year-round and appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please visit www.gre.org for this news.

THE PAPER-BASED GENERAL TEST measures:

  • verbal reasoning
  • quantitative reasoning
  • analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.

Scores: Three scores are reported on the General Test:

  • a verbal reasoning score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments
  • a quantitative reasoning score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments
  • an analytical writing score reported on a 0-6 score scale, in half-point increments

Time: Total testing time is up to 3 3/4 hours.

Structures: The Paper-Based General Test contains five sections.

In addition, one unidentified pretest section may be included, and this section can appear in any position in the test after the analytical writing section. Questions in the pretest section are being tested for possible use in future tests and answers will not count toward your scores.

The analytical writing section is always first. For the Issue task, two topics will be presented and you will choose one. The Argument task does not present a choice of topics; instead one topic will be presented.

The verbal and quantitative sections may appear in any order, including an unidentified verbal or quantitative pretest section. Treat each section presented during your test as if it counts.

THE SUBJECT TESTS:  gauge undergraduate achievement in the eight disciplines listed below. Each Subject Test is intended for students who have majored in or have extensive background in that specific area.

               Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology
               Biology
               Chemistry
               Computer Science
               Literature in English
               Mathematics
               Physics
               Psychology

Due to the number of testers for the upcoming April 12 GRE Subject Test, the location of the test has changed. Please make note of the new address:
FORTUNA HOTEL
6B LANG HA STREET
HANOI, VIETNAM

Scores: One total score is reported on a 200-990 score scale, in 10-point increments, although the score range for any particular Subject Test is usually smaller.

Sub scores are reported for the Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology; Biology; and Psychology Tests on a 20-99 score scale, in 1-point increments, although the range for any particular Subject Test sub score is usually smaller.

Time: The testing time is up to 3 1/2 hours
